Note that I said 'non-specific', with which I meant things to try out if one has no real clues what the problem might be one might also call them generic. I've posted/linked to a comprehensive but non-specific list of things one can try out (though I see that point 11 and 17 since Lion are actually just one item, re-install the OS over the existing installation).

  • Whether their are any messages on this in Console.app?.
  • Whether their could be a hardware element contributing to this?.
  • Whether it can be linked to any activities that trigger it?.
  • Whether it is related to TextEdit or to the broader OS?.
  • Whether the problem is something inside your user folder (deleting the prefs is part of trying to confirm that) or not?.
  • You are hoping for (b) but most often (a) is the only solution. I'm seeing the latter frequently with one third-party app, always when waking the computer from sleep or switching networks and occasionally with one or two other third-party apps and very occasionally with an Apple app (I remember Mail.app but I think I've seen other Apple apps crashing as well).

    And if it hangs, do you get the spinning beachball? A full crash (where all windows of the app disappear and the app disappears from the Dock or its indicator light their turns off) normally throws up a dialogue box saying the app has crashed and asking whether to restart the app or not.
